Heritage properties offer options for communities to mitigate and adapt to climate change through the ecosystem benefits, such as water and climate regulation and convey traditional knowledge that builds resilience for change to come and leads us to a more sustainable future. Cultural heritage offers immense and virtually untapped potential to drive climate action and support ethical and equitable transitions by communities towards low carbon, climate resilient development pathways. Realizing that potential, however, requires both better recognition of the cultural dimensions of climate change and adjusting the aims and methodologies of heritage practice. This seminar will highlight number of ways to consider the linkages between climate policies in Nigeria and various cultural heritage sites in Nigeria. Also, multi-disciplinary approaches to leveraging the significance of cultural heritage for community-driven climate action will be discussed. This seminar will bring together archaeologists, urban planners, architects, historians and cultural heritage practitioners working on linkages between climate change, cultural heritage and communities. The key focus is on slow- and sudden-onset climate risks (such as drought, flooding, coastal erosion etc) affecting various cultural heritage in Nigeria.
