Climate risks in the mining sector: how to promote local sustainability

Mining is associated with pressing environmental and social challenges in extraction sites, many of which are likely to be exacerbated by climate change. Take part in this webinar on 5 May to learn more about climate risks in the mining sector.
In this webinar hosted by Mistra Geopolitics, researchers from Stockholm University will present the findings from a new report which analyses the adaptation responses of the 37 largest global mining companies and to what extent such private initiatives have been regulated by states. Drawing on examples from the mining sector, we reflect upon the role of the private sector in climate adaptation with a focus on its societal consequences and identify key governance gaps for securing community resilience. The high-level seminar panel will hear from esteemed speakers from the Ford Foundation, International Council on Mining and Metals and the International Finance Corporation. The seminar will focus on three key questions:
- In contexts where climate risks and mining coincide, what is required to avoid that mining-affected communities bear a disproportionate burden?
- How can private adaptation initiatives be designed to bring mutual co-benefits to corporations and communities alike?
- What role can international financial institutions play in promoting community resilience in the context of climate change?
