About The Event
CDRI, in partnership with IORA secretariat, is hosting a series of interactive learning webinars to share knowledge, good practices, and foster peer-to-peer learning among IORA member states representatives. The webinars are being organised on DRI Connect, CDRI's knowledge exchange, learning and collaborative platform, from the month of November 2025 to January 2026.
Key Objectives
- Understanding the risks and impacts of disasters and climate change on built environment and critical infrastructure.
- Exploring practical solutions aligned to resilient urban infrastructure system, nature-based solutions, financial instruments and governance frameworks towards addressing extreme heat and flooding in IORA member states.
- Sharing good practices and case studies through expert webinars, interactions and cross learning.
Each webinar will combine expert-led presentations with interactive engagement to ensure an immersive learning experience. Sessions will be delivered by domain experts from CDRI and partner organisations, offering a mix of conceptual insights, practical examples, and case studies relevant to coastal regions. This series includes three webinars:
- Application of NbS in Coastal Areas - 13 November 2025
- Resilient Housing - 04 December 2025
- Financing resilient infrastructure - 22 January 2026
Learning Webinar 2: Resilient Housing
The G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (G20 DRRWG) emphasizes the need for disaster resilient and accessible infrastructure that can withstand multiple hazards such as flooding, cyclones and the growing risks associated with extreme heat. The risk to buildings, and specifically housing and social infrastructure, due to climate and geo hazards has been estimated to be up to USD431 billion. This underscores the importance of making all types of buildings, especially housing and social infrastructure such as schools and hospitals, disaster resilient.[2]
The second webinar in this series, titled 'Resilient Housing' is scheduled for 04 December 2025 and is being organized in partnership with the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS). This session will explore methodological approaches to climate- and disaster-responsive design principles and compliance with existing disaster-resilient codes and standards, specifically for coastal regions.
The webinar will feature an overview of CDRI's knowledge product - the Compendium of Case Studies on Disaster Resilient Housing and Facilities, prepared at the request of the G20 South Africa Presidency. Discussions will highlight the need for holistic development approaches that enhance resilience by integrating natural infrastructure, promoting nature-based solutions, and mainstreaming gender, disability, and social inclusion considerations. In addition, the webinar will delve into long-term resilience planning and governance, emphasizing the importance of making adequate provisions for repair and retrofit to reduce disruptions caused by increasingly frequent and intense climate-induced disasters in coastal regions.
