Building back better: gender inequality and Great East Japan Earthquake
This event will highlight two gender inequality issues that have emerged:
1. marginalization of pregnant and breastfeeding women and their infants during emergency assistance; and
2. women’s unequal access to financial and other assistance due to the patriarchal distribution system.
It will examine what happened on the ground from a gender perspective and in view of global standards, together with experts and practitioners working in these specified areas. It will also draw concrete recommendations for policy change in strengthening disaster risk reduction policies and operations in Japan, and as a building block to the 2015 World Conference on Disaster Reduction.
