Background
Disasters and humanitarian crises can disrupt access to essential medicines, diagnostics and treatment for people living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). For those who depend on regular care, these interruptions can lead to serious complications and preventable deaths.
Yet NCDs are still not systematically integrated into disaster preparedness, emergency response and recovery.
How can humanitarian organizations, health systems and communities become better prepared to maintain essential NCD care before, during and after crises?
On 16 November, the Danish Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) will convene humanitarian actors, government representatives, researchers, National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and partners in Geneva for Beyond Dialogue: Key Recommendations on NCD Resilience, Preparedness and Continuity of Care in Disaster-Prone and Humanitarian Settings.
The event will bring together operational experience and research evidence to identify practical solutions and develop recommendations for strengthening NCD preparedness and continuity of care.
Discussions will focus on three interconnected dimensions:
- Prepared systems: Integrating NCDs into health systems and disaster preparedness.
- Prepared services: Strengthening continuity of care through task-sharing and community-based approaches.
- Prepared people and communities: Supporting self-care, peer support and community resilience.
The recommendations will contribute to preparations for the 2027 UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage and broader discussions on health system resilience and humanitarian preparedness.
