The main purpose of this 2-week course is to enhance the capabilities of managers and technical staff in disaster risk management, by providing them understanding of the use of remote sensing and GIS techniques to detect, map and monitor damage of tsunami to mangrove and other coastal resources.

Course content
1. Introduction to mangroves and coastal resources.
2. Introduction to tsunami.
3. Remote sensing and GIS techniques for mangroves, coastal zones and tsunami.
4. Tsunami modelling for estimating inundation extent and depth.
5. The application of remote sensing and GIS for mangrove
and coastal resources assessment: 4 case studies from
South-east Asia.
6. The application of remote sensing and GIS in assessing
damage of tsunami on mangroves and the role of mangrove
in reducing and preventing the effect of tsunami
on human and natural resources in coastal zone.
Five case studies will be presented:
• Case study of tsunami and its effect on the coastal
zone in Thailand
• Case study of the prevention of tsunami effect on the
coastal zone in Tamil State of India
• Case study of the effect of tsunami on agricultural
and human resources in Sri Lanka
• Case study of mangroves reducing and preventing the
effect of tsunami on human and natural resources in
coastal zone of Andaman and Necobar Islands of India
• Case study of the rehabilitation of human and natural
resources effected by tsunami in Aceh province in
Indonesia

The objective of the course is to give the participants an
overview of the applications of remote sensing and GIS to detect, map, monitor damage of tsunami to mangrove and
other coastal zone, human and natural resources. In addition,
by bringing together participants from different institutes
but with a similar interest in modelling and managing
disaster of tsunami, the course aims to provide a platform
for the exchange of experiences in the field of applications
of RS/GIS in managing and monitoring effect of tsunami on
mangroves and coastal zone resources.

The course will include extensive exercises based on different
GIS and image processing software. Therefore participants should have a basic knowledge of computers. All teaching and teaching materials will be in English. It is essential that participants are fully conversant in English.
