Work Placements Manager

The UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) is an exciting cross-UCL department, which leads research, knowledge exchange and teaching in the fields of risk and disaster reduction and humanitarian action. The department is in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences (MAPS), but works across all UCL’s faculties, spanning natural and social sciences, mathematics and statistics, engineering and development planning, global health, anthropology, the humanities, ethics and laws, and contributes to UCL’s Grand Challenges. It has a leading role in the UCL Humanitarian Institute. It is strongly international with developing partnerships with universities in China, Japan,  South Asia, the Middle East and South-east Asia.

The main purpose of the role is to build and maintain relationships with partners and manage employer / host engagement with the IRDR and its students, especially to secure summer placements for BSc Global Humanitarian Studies students. Approximately 60 offers from employers / hosts will be required each year, during the summer between 2nd and 3rd years. The role holder will support students to enable them to source and apply for placements and be the point of contact between students, employers and academic staff. They will contribute to the career development of all IRDR students.

The appointments is a part-time (0.5 FTE) professional services role at Grade 7.

Key requirements

We are seeking a candidate with strong relationship building skills with experience of building and maintaining customer / stakeholder relationships with a range of employers / hosts. They should have knowledge of intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organisations, universities, the public sector, consultancies and the private sector, in the UK and internationally, in the humanitarian sphere. They should have excellent and up-to-date working knowledge of social media channels. They should also have excellent networking and negotiation skills, and faultless attention to detail in written and verbal communication. We are seeking a creative and adaptable person able to work both independently and as part of a team, who can use their initiative to deliver results.
