Description
SUNSHINE is an EU-funded project coordinated by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS). The project aims to strengthen disaster resilience across Europe by facilitating the uptake of EU Space Programme data and services-such as Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS), Galileo Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS), Space Situational Awareness (SSA), and GOVSATCOM-within civil protection frameworks, in support of the objectives of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).
As part of its capacity-building activities, the SUNSHINE project is organising a full-day online technical training webinar on 20 January 2026, from 09.30 to 17.00 CET. The webinar will combine project-level context with hands-on technical training, providing participants with practical guidance on how to access and use EU Space services for disaster preparedness, early warning, response, and recovery.
The morning sessions will begin with an introduction to the SUNSHINE project, outlining its objectives, scope, and training approach. This will be followed by technical training modules focusing on the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), with particular attention to the European Drought Observatory (EDO) and the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL). These sessions will demonstrate how CEMS products can support situational awareness, risk monitoring, and impact assessment.
The afternoon sessions will focus on Galileo-based services, including the Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS), Open Service Navigation Message Authentication (OSNMA), the High Accuracy Service (HAS), and Search and Rescue (SAR). Participants will receive an overview of these services and their relevance for civil protection operations.
Throughout the day, the webinar will adopt an interactive format. Training sessions will include live demonstrations, real-time screen sharing of operational portals, quizzes, and guided exercises, enabling participants to familiarise themselves with data access procedures and explore datasets directly. Dedicated Q&A sessions will allow for direct interaction with technical experts and trainers.
Who should attend
The webinar is open to anyone interested in learning more about the SUNSHINE project and its capacity-building activities. Participation is particularly recommended for:
- Civil protection authorities and emergency response coordinators at national, regional, or local level

- National Training Coordinators under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM)
- Policy-makers, trainers, and scientific or technical advisors working on disaster preparedness and early warning systems
- Representatives from academic or research institutions in relevant fields
