After Maria: Everyday recovery from disaster
Following Hurricane Maria in 2017, a researcher followed twelve families to understand how recovery unfolds during the intimate moments and private spaces of everyday life. In 2019 this research was translated into a comic.
After Maria explores the short and long-term social, cultural, economic and psychological impacts of disasters that go under the radar of the international news media. The comic helps readers discover what recovery means for disaster-affected families - is it simply repairing a damaged roof, or does it also include recovering a sense of home, family cohesion, or livelihoods? Lastly, the comic helps teach how family members experience disaster recovery differently.
