Jamaica: disaster mitigation, preparedness and response - A community-­participation approach

This document aims to demonstrate that Jamaica is in a unique position to improve its national disaster management framework by: (i) using currently available information on predictions for 'natural' disasters that threaten its territory; and (ii) drawing on lessons learnt from experiences in other regions of the world that have experienced a range of different types of large-scale disaster over the past decades, such as Haiti.

It also stresses the role of active communities within the disaster management framework, highlighting how they can contribute to government efforts, help minimize loss and damage, and effectively shorten the time and cost of recovery.
