Scientists analysing the Kilauea eruption have found that old lava explains why some fissures were extra explosive. Moreover, lava after the eruption travelled far and fast, and marine life quickly sprouted along newly deposited flows where the eruption went into the ocean. The volcano's caldera also collapsed in stages and sulfur dioxide levels were very high.
Increasingly, disasters are prompting research collaboration to collect data, assess damage and better understand challenges. The Strategic Sciences Group for example was formed following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These instances of scientific research in the aftermath of disasters will help with future disaster preparedness and response.

The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
