The Barbados Meteorological Services has significantly enhanced its capacity to monitor weather conditions across the island, enabling more accurate and community-specific data on temperature, wind direction, wind speed, and rainfall.
There is a lack of awareness among stakeholders about what risk data is already available, and countries are typically sceptical about the data from global risk datasets, especially if they were not included in data collection or the development process.
The Barbados Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) Policy 2022 ensures that there is a strategic direction to keeping people safe and making communities more resilient to disaster and climate related risks and impacts.
The Caribbean and the Indian Ocean Island States are among the most disaster-prone regions globally, facing hurricanes, cyclones, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Their size, limited resources, and geographical isolation amplify these challenges.
Barbados has the capacity to detect, and receive early notice of, an impending tsunami event to assist with the timely evacuation of coastal areas under threat.
The “Regional Launch of the Early Warnings for All Initiative (EW4ALL) for the Caribbean” aims to drive coordinated political action towards strengthening multi-hazard early warning systems.
This will be the first regional launch of the initiative worldwide, and it will be an opportunity to harness the highest political as well as technical support to achieve the ambition set by the UN SG.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
