L’Aquila, 10 years on

Source(s):  Swiss Reinsurance Company (Swiss Re)

This paper focuses on earthquakes in Italy and their economic cost. High reconstruction cost following the earthquake in L’Aquila in 2009 are examined, where the government embarked on a long and expensive reconstruction drive.

An overview of public policy initiatives to build a culture of resilience for the future is provided. This includes government implementation of fiscal measures to encourage retrofitting of vulnerable structures, and the uptake of natural catastrophe insurance cover by private households and businesses.
