Global best practices for disaster mitigation and management (2026)
This publication was developed by Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). It compiles national experiences and international best practices for managing disaster and climate-related risks, offering practical, evidence-based guidance aimed at a wide range of stakeholders—governments, communities, academia, humanitarian organizations, the private sector, and emergency responders. Responding to the growing frequency and complexity of climate extremes and emergencies worldwide, the resource champions a proactive, whole-of-society approach to disaster risk reduction, centered on strengthening early warning systems, building community resilience, promoting climate-smart development, applying ecosystem-based adaptation, and improving institutional coordination across sectors.
The publication functions as both a knowledge base and a decision-support tool, with learnings tailored to different audiences: it helps policymakers strengthen risk governance and contingency planning, supports practitioners in sharpening preparedness and response capabilities, and offers useful insights for researchers, trainers, and community leaders. Its central takeaway is the value of blending indigenous knowledge with scientific innovation and lessons drawn from global experience—an approach meant to help stakeholders adopt proven solutions, reduce vulnerabilities, and ultimately build safer, more disaster-resilient communities.
