This paper seeks to explore the empirical relationship between natural disasters and poverty in Latin American. It estimates the relation between natural events and social indicators at the local level, establishing a causal link whenever possible, and analyses the potential role played by coping mechanisms to influence long-term impacts on welfare. Its main objective is to contribute to the debate and knowledge about this theme, and to provide some relevant policy recommendations.
