2026 National disaster preparedness consumer survey findings
This report presents findings from the 2026 National Disaster Preparedness Consumer Survey, conducted online by KRC Research on behalf of United Way Worldwide and Verizon between 20 July and 7 August 2026. The survey included 3,700 U.S. adults aged 18 and older, including a nationally representative sample and oversamples from West Virginia, Nevada and Arizona. The report examines concern about natural disasters, household preparedness, barriers to preparedness, trusted information sources, personal support networks and regional differences across the United States.
The findings show that 6 in 10 adults are concerned that a natural disaster could affect their household in the next 12 months, but only 15% feel very prepared for one. Cost and affordability are identified as the leading barrier to preparedness, followed by not knowing what to do or how to get started. Preparedness kits or supplies are the most requested form of support. Among respondents who have experienced a natural disaster, 68% wish they had done something differently to prepare and 87% say the experience has made them more focused on preparedness. The report also highlights the importance of personal networks, with 73% saying they can rely on their network in times of need.
