2024 Global Natural Disaster Assessment report
The report covers the characteristics and patterns of global natural disasters in 2024, focusing on a natural disaster in China in 2024, extreme heat disasters in the Middle East (summer of 2024), and the cross-border economic impacts caused by Typhoon Yagi in 2024. The assessment utilizes multiple data sources, including the Global Disaster Data Platform (GDDAT), EM-DAT, GDACS, data from IFRC, Chinese government disaster statistics, and data from reinsurance companies (Munich Re, Swiss Re). It has received support from relevant industry sectors, international organizations, social organizations, universities, and research institutes.
As a crucial component of the global disaster risk reduction (DRR) efforts, the regular release of global natural disaster assessment reports has become standard practice for international organizations, research institutions, and insurance/reinsurance companies in this field. More importantly, it serves as a key link in promoting global disaster information sharing and strengthening risk communication. In this regard, IRDR endorses and contributes to this annual Global Natural Disaster Assessment Report. It is also a contribution to the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. IRDR and co-producers of this report aim to leverage such standardized and normative information products to advance practical cooperation in international DRR, thereby injecting momentum into building safer and more sustainable disaster resilience systems.
