This report reviews the availability of data in Canada to report against the indicators recommended to measure the global targets of the Sendai Framework, and identify current gaps.

Canadian buildings and infrastructure are being more and more challenged by the impacts of climate change and an increase in extreme weather events such as damaging floods and devastating high winds. In response, the National Research Council along with Infrastructure Canada is upgrading codes, specifications, guidelines, and assessment tools to keep Canadians safe.

A new public awareness campaign was launched at the National Roundtable on Disaster Risk Reduction to increase Canadians’ knowledge of flood risks. The roundtable brought together all levels of government, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and individual Canadians to find innovative ways to collectively reduce the risks and impacts of disasters.

Canada will welcome over 1000 participants from across the Western hemisphere to Montreal, Quebec for the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Second Meeting of Ministers and High Level Authorities on the Sendai Framework. Key outcomes will include the endorsement of a Regional Action Plan to meet the commitments of the Sendai Framework.
