An analysis on what drives extreme droughts suggests that anthropogenic climate change might have contributed to the current drought in Cape Town. Unlike the rest of South Africa, Cape Town does not have a predictable weather pattern related to El Niño and La Niña, making droughts less predictable and prompting calls for more flexible drought management strategies.
