Background

The Women’s International Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (WIN DRR) aims to empower women and enhance their role in decision-making in disaster risk reduction in the Asia-Pacific region by promoting and supporting women’s leadership. WIN DRR supports the implementation of the Sendai Framework by empowering women to attain leadership in disaster risk reduction in the Asia-Pacific region in four ways:

  • Building the evidence base for women’s leadership in DRR by conducting research and documenting good practices and case studies.
  • Strengthening leadership capacities through professional development opportunities, mentorship and peer-to-peer support programmes.
  • Recognising women’s achievements through annual awards for women’s leadership and supporting women’s participation in DRR conferences and events.
  • Supporting institutions to enhance women’s leadership by adopting strategies and policies to reduce the barriers women face in advancing their careers.

This roundtable is organised jointly with PreventionWeb, the global knowledge-sharing platform for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience. On PreventionWeb, users may find the latest research, news and policies and even look for events that match their interests. Anyone can register on the platform and receive all the latest updates on what's going on in the DRR world. Members of the DRR community can also submit content for featuring on the website, and share what they have been doing on reducing and preventing disasters.

The inaugural WIN DRR Leadership Awards were awarded in October 2021, recognising the achievements of women working in disaster risk reduction across the Asia-Pacific region. A total of 153 nominations from 22 countries were received, with 10 finalists shortlisted in the Rising Star and Excellence award categories.

This 90-minute roundtable discussion will be an informal networking opportunity for WIN DRR members, where they can hear more about the work of the finalists and share with each other. Recognising the diversity of contexts across the Asia-Pacific region the roundtable discussion will provide an opportunity to connect with and learn from each other.

Objective

The overall objective of the WIN DRR Leadership Awards Roundtable Discussion is to hear more about and learn from the work of some of the WIN DRR Leadership Award finalists. The roundtable discussion will also offer a networking opportunity for WIN DRR members, who will be able to connect with each other during the breakout group discussions.
