About

This conference is part of the III Conference Cycle of the Postgraduate Program in “Investigation and Security in Catastrophes, Crises and Accidents” at Miguel Torga Higher Institute (Portugal) and addresses one of the most pressing contemporary challenges in disaster risk reduction: the production and use of actionable scientific knowledge to support decision-making in the context of climate adaptation.

The event aims to contribute to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) by strengthening understanding of how scientific knowledge can be translated into practical decision-making processes, improving institutional preparedness, adaptive governance, and evidence-informed responses to climate-related risks and environmental uncertainty.

The conference will be led by Professor Maria Carmen Lemos, Guest Speaker, faculty member at the University of Michigan (USA), an internationally recognized scholar in environmental governance, climate adaptation, science-policy interfaces, and the role of usable knowledge in environmental decision-making.

The opening and moderation of the conference will be conducted by Noémia Salgado Cunha, Scientific Coordinator of the Postgraduate Programme, while the closing remarks will be delivered by Cristina Mendonça, Lecturer in the Postgraduate and Coordinator of the Forensic Disaster Intervention Unit at the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (Portugal).

The target audience includes students, academics, researchers, policymakers, civil protection professionals, environmental managers, and stakeholders involved in disaster risk management, climate adaptation, and public decision-making.
