Objectives

After attending the course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the key concepts related to disaster risk reduction (DRR), Hyogo Frame Work of Action and other related concepts.
  • Analyse participatory vulnerability and capacity assessment (PVCA) and emergency preparedness.
  • Disaster resistant livelihoods and mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in development.
  • Develop and implement plans for appropriate disaster risk reduction measures and manage them with key planning tools.
  • Analyse policy issues in dealing with disaster risk reduction measures.
  • Acquire problem solving skills in disaster risk management measures .

Course Contents

Basic Concepts: Concepts related to DRR, vulnerability, Hyogo Frame Work of Action, etc.

Community based participatory vulnerability and capacity Assessment (PVCA) and disaster preparedness: This unit covers theoretical framework of PVCA, methodology and process of doing PVCA, elements of disaster preparedness. There will be a field visit to carry out PVCA in the community.

Disaster resistant livelihoods and mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in development: This unit analyses approaches to disaster resistant livelihoods and mainstreaming disaster risk measures.

Planning and Implementing a disaster risk management programme at the community level: This unit analyses planning tools to develop community based DRR programmes.

Policy issues in dealing with the disaster risk reduction measures: This analyses different international and national legislations in dealing with DRR.

Project Based Assignment: Analysis of a disaster risk reduction measures in the context of a particular community in Afghanistan.

Methodology

The course consists of presentations, participatory discussions simulations, field visits, case studies and readings, a final examination and project based assignment. At the end of the intensive training, 5 written tasks (800-1000 words each) and a project based assignment for 4000 words are expected from those who wish to enroll for the University of Ghalib Graduate Diploma in Disaster Risk Management. Participants are free to complete the examination, tasks and assignments either in Dari or English. There will be pastoral support for the students during the training to complete the tasks and assignment.

Total Learning Hours: 145 hours

Those who do not enroll for the University approved Graduate Diploma, will get a certificate of participation if they attend the total
days of intensive training.
