Background

UNECE is hosting a Special Session of the Working Group on Implementation (WGI): Seminar on good practices and lessons learned in implementing the UNECE Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents on 3-4 February 2022 from 11:00–13:00 CET and 15:00–17:00 CET on both days. The Special Session will be a hybrid meeting held in Geneva and online (via Zoom) with English, French and Russian interpretation.

The Special Session will promote national and transboundary good practices and lessons learned in the implementation of the Industrial Accidents Convention, in order to help overcome implementation gaps by facilitating the exchange of information among Parties and other countries. National authorities will present on good practices and lessons learned from their countries to a broad audience. In this regard, WGI members have analysed the national implementation reports of Parties and committed countries to the Industrial Accidents Convention from the 9th reporting round and beyond. Their analysis identified gaps in implementation in the following areas under the Convention and good practices and lessons learned in overcoming them:

  1. Prevention of industrial accidents;
  2. Identification and notification of hazardous substance;
  3. Emergency preparedness, response and mutual assistance;
  4. Information to and participation of the public;
  5. Decision-making on siting and land-use planning;
  6. Scientific and technical cooperation and exchange of information.

Further information, including a Draft Agenda (English and Russian) and a Concept Note (English and Russian), can be found on the webpage.

If interested, please click here to register for the Special Session, ideally  by 27 January 2022, while registrations will remain open even after that date. Once registered, the UNECE secretariat will send more details on how to connect to the event closer to it.
