The processes of economic and human development are imminently connected to climate and weather, including the frequency and severity of natural hazards. The continuous influence of human activity on environment led to such problems like climate change, degradation of soil and water resources, occurrence of more and more destructive disasters, most of them of hydrometeorological origin. In the context of global development, greater emphasis is put on building human capabilities to face natural hazards. National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) represent the main unit of national infrastructure for the prevention and mitigation of natural hazards impact. Thus the Regional Scientific and Technical Conference on the Role of the NMHSs in prevention and mitigation of natural hazards impact will be an effective multidisciplinary event and an important step towards concrete regional cooperative events for the disaster risk reduction capacity building in the region.

Main goals
1. To reflect the role of NMHSs and their cooperation with the user community and other relevant institutions in the disaster risk reduction, in reaching the common goal of preventing and mitigating the natural hazards impact towards a sustainable development.

2. To evaluate, with the key WMO partners, as UN/ISDR, GEO, World Bank, the critical role of NMHSs in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at the national and regional level.

3. To identify and prioritize major gaps and needs for the developing of the DRR capacities, and

4. To develop concrete plans to address these challenges sustainably over time.
