About

Agrifood systems sit at the heart of the climate and development challenge. Yet they remain largely absent from global just transition frameworks. This omission is especially significant for rural communities, informal workers, women and small-scale producers, who are among the most exposed to climate and economic shocks while often excluded from social protections, finance and decision-making processes.

During London Climate Action Week 2026, this public dialogue, co-convened by ODI Global and The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), will elevate agrifood systems within global just transition debates.

It will explore how just transition frameworks can more effectively address the interconnected challenges of agrifood systems, ensuring inclusive outcomes for rural livelihoods, sustainable food production, and climate resilience.

This dialogue comes at a critical moment. In international climate negotiations there is increasing recognition of the importance of just transition frameworks, including through the COP30 Belém Action Mechanism for Just Transition and the Belém Gender Action Plan. We will explore how agrifood systems can be positioned at the centre of climate, development and energy transition debates ahead of COP31.

Across three high-level panel discussions, the event will explore why just transitions must fully incorporate agrifood systems; examine issues of women’s empowerment, informality, and justice within these systems; and consider whose pathways and priorities should shape just transition processes in agrifood contexts.
