About
The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (Sendai Framework) was adopted on 18 March 2015 to address the increasing challenges brought by natural hazards andprovide concrete actions to protect development gains from the risk of disasters.
UNESCO's initiatives are closely aligned with the Sendai Framework, reflecting its global priorities on Africa and gender, as well as priority areas such as Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and youth, through multi-hazards, multi-stakeholder, and multidisciplinary approaches. Operating at the interface of natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication, UNESCO fosters a global culture of resilience.
As we approach the 10-year milestone of the Sendai Framework, the Conference will take stock of UNESCO's advancements and outline future directions, emphasizing the prevention, reduction, and management of disaster risks. It will hence contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which are central to UNESCO's Disaster Risk Reduction programme.
The conference will cover four sessions focusing on various aspects:
- Science Technology, and Innovation for resilience
- Resilient Built Environment
- Culture, Nature-based Solutions (NbS), and indigenous knowledge system for disaster risk reduction
- Economics of Disaster Risk Reduction investment
