CRED International summer course
The increasing magnitude of problems related to disasters and conflicts in developing and developed countries has underlined the need for a more professional approach to disaster management. Recent events in Kosovo, Timor, India and Turkey have demonstrated the acute need in trained personnel both at international and national levels. The links between disaster effects and development have given rise to the concept of preparedness and mitigation as key issues in disaster management.
It is in this context that the First International Course was organized by CRED in collaboration of the World Health Organization (WHO) in October 1980, in Brussels. The second was held in 1988 and since then, the course is conducted at regular intervals (every two years).
The objectives of the course are to provide: (a) an understanding of the principles of disaster preparedness and management by the health sector; (b) a familiarity with rapid assessment methods in the health response; (c) a practical experience with specialized software for response management and planning.
