"ADPC’s Young Professional Platform - Interns Talk” 8th Episode on "Beyond hazards: uncovering hidden vulnerabilities in disaster risk"
Microsoft Teams
Disasters do not affect everyone equally. People who already experience vulnerability in their daily lives often face disproportionately greater impacts during crises due to social, economic, physical, and environmental constraints. The idea for this webinar was inspired by the organizer’s participation in a training on vulnerability in disaster situations, which highlighted how pre-existing inequalities can become significantly amplified when disasters occur.
This webinar will explore how integrating geospatial perspectives with social vulnerability analysis can provide a more comprehensive understanding of disaster risk. Using comparative spatial analysis through selected case studies, the session will demonstrate how hazard information, population distribution, critical facilities, and spatial accessibility can be combined to reveal hidden patterns of vulnerability and identify gaps in disaster preparedness and response. By strengthening evidence-based planning and encouraging meaningful participation of vulnerable groups in co-designing disaster risk reduction strategies, the webinar aims to support more inclusive, resilient, and people-centered disaster risk management.
