India: Disaster management plan

India is endowed with vast resources of livestock, including poultry and fisheries. The livestock sector plays an important role in the country's national economy and socio-economic development. But India and its smallholder farmers are vulnerable to several natural hazards.

This plan seeks to delineate the actions and roles necessary to prepare for and respond to any disaster situation in a coordinated manner. The plan aims to:

  • - Supplement the efforts of states/UTs in mitigating and preventing the loss of livestock resources and economic losses to livestock owners.
  • - Mitigate the effects of natural hazards by ensuring availability of services and supplies, such as veterinary services, fodder, water, and other critical inputs/supplies.
  • - Build the capacity of relevant officers and staff in state governments in association with the organizations and agencies involved in disaster management.

This document establishes broad guidelines and features hazard maps to help states navigate emergency situations. Nonetheless, states are still responsible for developing their own disaster management plans.
