Montego Bay Declaration on Jobs and Inclusive Growth: Partnerships for Sustainable Tourism

This declaration was endorsed by the representatives of UNWTO Member States and Affiliate Members, tourism administrations, international and regional organizations, local communities, private sector and academia, who gathered in Montego Bay, Jamaica on 27-29 November 2017 for the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Government of Jamaica, World Bank Group (WBG) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Conference on ‘Jobs and Inclusive Growth: Partnerships for Sustainable Tourism'. This was an official event of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017.

The declaration is concerned with tourism development as an opportunity for sustainable development and building resilience for tourism by advancing crisis preparedness and management capabilities as well as the full integration of tourism in emergency structures. It notes the impact of climate change and extreme weather for tourism, especially in small island states, and calls for the establishment of a Global Tourism Resilience Centre in the Caribbean, including a Sustainable Tourism Observatory, to assist destinations’ preparedness, management and recovery of crises which impact tourism and threaten economies and livelihoods.
