United Kingdom: Civil contingencies act 2004 and regulations

This act makes wide-ranging provisions for national emergencies and civil contingencies. It requires local and regional authorities to design detailed plans for dealing with an emergency. Specific disaster risk reduction (DRR) provisions include: section 2(1)(a) which creates a duty to assess the risks of an emergency occurring; section 2(1)(g) which creates a duty to warn the public if an emergency is likely to occur; and section 2(5) which deals with disaster risk management.

In November 2005 the UK Parliament passed regulations to the act cited as the Civil contingencies act 2004 (contingency planning) regulations 2005. Relevant DRR provisions can be found in part 3 of the regulations.
