What is disaster recovery?

In the wake of Australia's catastrophic bushfire season, many communities are now embarking on a journey of recovery. But what do we really mean when we talk about disaster recovery?

An introduction to the basics of disaster recovery and explores important aspects in theory and practice from speakers with experience and expertise in the field.

Guest speakers 

  • John Richardson from Australian Red Cross provides an overview of the key elements of disaster recovery, including the impacts on people, how people respond, what we can do to help navigate the recovery process, and practising self-care for recovery workers.
  • Kirsten Jenkins from Maroondah City Council brings a personal perspective from working in recovery for local and state government following events such as Black Saturday, supporting staff and community experiencing trauma, and key takeaways about being a recovery manager.

Community-led recovery

Community-led recovery is one of the National Principles for Disaster Recovery. So what is it all about and how can you put it in action with bushfire affected communities?

Deepen your understanding and explore key aspects of community-led recovery from leading practitioners in this field.

  • Louise Mitchell from the Social Recovery Reference Group provides an overview of community-led recovery, how it has been interpreted and applied after disasters, and how we might think about it during this time of limiting the spread of COVID-19.
  • Margaret Darveniza from Townsville City Council speaks to her experience facilitating communications, intelligence and advocacy to enable community-led recovery, and what’s happening with recovery in Townsville a year on from unprecedented floods.
