Disaster risk profile of the Republic of Seychelles
This comprehensive risk analysis of the Seychelles is intended to determine the nature of the hazards and vulnerabilities that need to be addressed. It is one of the first steps in the process of supporting the Government of the Seychelles, with the establishment of a comprehensive Early Warning and Disaster Management system with appropriate mechanisms at national and local level.
The study aims to: (i) identify and describe major past disasters that stroke the country and need to be addressed; (ii) create a profile of natural disasters impact on Seychelles; (iii) produce scenarios and trends concerning hazard and vulnerability projections with regards to climate change impact; (iv) provide tools and guidelines to the Department of Risk and Disaster Management (DRDM) to monitor and prevent disasters, reduce the vulnerability of elements at risk. Hazards covered include: tsunamis, storms (cyclones, storm surge), heavy rainfalls and floods, ground movements and landslides, and forest fires.
