Following the landslide in Chittagong, Bangladesh, that was caused by torrental rain, M. Miyanur Rahman of Islamic Relief Worldwide is urging the government to introduce disaster risk management measures in the affected areas. In the article that was published in The Daily Star, the development researcher recommends risk zone mapping for the Chittagong Division and introducing comprehensive programmes for this region, as well as putting early warning strategies in place.
Mr Rahman emphasizes that particularly the poor local ethnic groups are vulnerable and calls for awareness raising campaigns and a "development approach, i.e. making people obliged to live in safe place after giving them some incentives like building safe houses for them in those identified safe places."
