Now more than ever: climate talks that work for those who need them most
This briefing note calls for a fair and safe deal during the next round of global climate negotiations and calls for Cancun to deliver outcomes that will have tangible benefits and respond to the needs of poor people to adapt to climate impacts – including the establishment of a fair global climate fund – and poor countries to pursue low-carbon development.
It uses the devastating floods in Pakistan, heat waves in Russia and sea level rise in Tuvalu as a reminder of the urgent need of a Cancun outcome and asks for COP16 to mark a vital step forward in the fight against climate change with decisions: (i) delivering concrete outcomes with tangible benefits for those suffering first and worst from a crisis they did least to cause; and (ii) repairing the trust between rich and poor countries, putting the world back on track to agree a safe and fair global deal.
