Mauritius island, famous for its beautiful beaches and rich marine life, is facing the threat of climate change-induced sea-level rise like so many islands.

As a Small Island Developing State in the middle of the Indian Ocean with a high dependency on marine resources, Mauritius has come up with several strategies to face sea level rise.

The island nation is under considerable risk due to climate change. Plans are underway to mitigate against that risk.

Mauritius is renowned for its investment in cyclone preparedness, but the government is keenly aware of the need to invest in prevention and mitigation.

Ahead of this year's DRR day, EPCO launches project with the goal of educating and sensitizing inhabitants of the Republic of Mauritius on the causes and effects of Climate Change.

The "Community Disaster Response Team Training" implemented by Mauritius Red Cross Society and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) in Mauritius empowers communities and builds resilience against Climate Change.

As Mauritius contends with climate-induced hazards, including flooding, unsustainable land use and ecological degradation are exacerbating vulnerability. But existing ecosystems are not considered a key source of resilience, some key actors are bystanders to environmental destruction, and officials are not implementing best practices when restoring ecosystems.

On International Day for Disaster Reduction, Mauritius's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre used smart phone applications to broadcast the day's theme of reducing the economic losses from disasters. Moreover, officials used an email campaign to sensitise local communities on reducing their disaster exposure and reining in their risks.
