The Australian Red Cross seeks a volunteer for an assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.

To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years and over, Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens with Special Category Visas.

To ensure the international community is positioned to support Pacific Island countries to prepare and respond to disasters, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) Regional Office, and the Pacific Humanitarian Team, actively support National Disaster Management Offices.

An AVID volunteer with communications and public information expertise is being sought to work on two portfolios. One will involve assisting the National Disaster Management Offices and Pacific Humanitarian Team to conduct a mapping exercise of public information, education and communications materials; the other developing communications materials for the World Humanitarian Summit Regional Consultations for Pacific, to be held in July 2015.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience in managing communications for a large organisation with a focus on information management and/or communication and advocacy
  • Experience in developing and implementing communications and advocacy strategies, particularly in publishing a range of communications materials and managing outreach events
  • Qualifications in communications, journalism, disaster management/humanitarian assistance, political science or relevant field
  • Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
