A new assessment of Papua New Guinea's tsunami early warning and mitigation system commenced last week with the support of a visiting team of experts from the Australian Bureau of Meteorolgy, the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC), University of Guam and Emergency Management Australia (EMA). It is funded by the Australian Government Agency for International Development (AusAID).

"Papua New Guinea requires an effective, integrated and people-focused early warning system. A needs analysis, with input from all stakeholders, will identify any priorities for improvement of this system." said SOPAC Community Risk Management Adviser, Michael Bronte Grapentin.
