Call for case studies: good practices and lessons learned from the development of climate services in the Pacific

Climate services: Supporting socio-economic development in the Pacific

The National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in the Pacific historically have been set up to fulfil the requirements for aviation and marine services as well as day-to-day forecasting services. Climate activities were mainly focused on data entry. Recently, many NMHSs have enhanced their climate services responsibilities and are aligning their activities with the objectives as set out in the Global Framework for Climate Services. Some of the initiatives implemented in the region are very unique to the Pacific given its circumstances.

We are seeking case studies of existing initiatives in the Pacific highlighting good practices and lessons learnt that can demonstrate the process of how climate services across different sectors have evolved and the value of using such services to inform decision making. A publication will be developed which showcases these examples from around the Pacific, and will reflect the progress and challenges in climate services, highlighting good practices from across the region. The compilation of studies will amplify and contribute to the international, regional and national dialogues and bring visibility to these services in the Pacific.

We invite you to share your experiences and call attention to the importance of climate services in supporting socio-economic development in the Pacific.

Submission guidance:

  • Case studies from across the Pacific NMHSs and collaborating regional organisations and partners on implementation of climate services are welcomed. Submissions are in English only.
  • Case studies should be short (~1150 words max, including images/diagrams and references) and designed to highlight the added value that climate services have made for socio-economic development in the Pacific.
  • Each case study should be accompanied by at least 3 high quality photographs showing activities, challenges or opportunities depicted in the case studies.
  • Coordinating partners will hold a Writeshop on “Climate services: documenting good practices and lessons learned from the development of climate services in the Pacific” for NMHSs in the Pacific from 7 – 11 September 2015, in Nadi, Fiji. All the relevant authors (present or not present at the workshop) will be acknowledged in the publication. Case Studies submitted by NMHSs will be reviewed during the Writeshop.
  • Final Drafts of Case Studies from partners or other stakeholders for review should be received by 2 November 2015.
  • A Science Editor will be contracted to provide the final touches to the stories to ensure there is consistency and the product is of high quality.
  • Edited stories compiled by the Science Editor will be submitted to an assessment team from SPREP, WMO, FMI, the Bureau and the Pacific Islands Climate Services Panel for reviewing before they are finalised for publication. Opportunities should also be explored to publish some of the stories in peer-reviewed journals.
  • All Case Studies must be completed using the Case Study Template.

Deadline for Submissions: 2 November 2015
