International conference on water related disaster reduction
Water related disaster losses have increased with global consequences. The situation is aggravated by population growth and global climate change constituting an increasing threat to economies, population and sustainable development. Tajikistan, as most of the countries of the world, is aware of the necessity of integrating efforts on reduction of disaster risks into the policy, plans and programs of sustainable development with the support of bilateral, regional and global cooperation, by forging partnerships.
In view of increasing concern about disasters, the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan has taken a decision to organize an International Conference on Water Related Disaster Reduction. This conference is aimed at mobilizing efforts of governments, UN organizations, international and regional organizations, private sector and civil society for the prevention of and preparedness for natural disasters, as well as assistance in raising public awareness, promoting best experience and facilitating cooperation. It is expected that the results of the 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit, which includes the priority theme «Water Disaster Management», will be widely discussed at this conference.
Objectives
1. Promoting cooperation among countries to prevent water related disasters and to minimize their impact on economic and social development;
2. Raising awareness at all levels about strategies to cope with water related disasters (floods, drought, etc.);
3. Contributing to the activities of the Water for Life Decade and to the global water and sanitation agenda.
