Essential Functions
The University of Nebraska at Omaha seeks applicants for a faculty position of Associate Professor/Chair of the Emergency Management and Disaster Science Program, within the School of Public Administration to begin in August 2020. A successful candidate for this position will possess a PhD in Emergency Management or a related field. We are seeking applicants who can provide administrative leadership and faculty expertise in the field of Emergency Management and Disaster Science. Candidates seeking to fill the position should have interests and demonstrated capacity to teach in at least one of the following areas: preparedness and risk management, agency collaboration, law and administration, and response and recovery. A willingness to teach introductory, upper level, and graduate courses in emergency management and offer courses in an on-line format is also required. Candidates must have the demonstrated ability to conduct research in emergency management and disaster science. Potential for externally funded and peer-reviewed published work is also required.
The position offers a teaching load of two courses per semester and a nine-month contract. One course release per year and stipend will be granted for serving as Program Chair. Duties include program administration, teaching, research, and community engagement.

The School of Public Administration boasts a supportive and collaborative academic culture. It has a statewide mission and offers the only accredited master’s and doctoral programs in public administration in the state. The School is home to one of the longest-accredited MPA programs in the country, enrolling over 200 graduate students. The MPA program is ranked among the top 10 percent of all such programs in the upcoming 2019 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools, and is ranked #11 in Nonprofit Management, #15 in Local Government Management, and #25 in Public Management and Leadership. The University is a Carnegie Doctoral Research University and the School is home to one of the few Ph.D. programs in Public Administration in the Great Plains region. Omaha is a dynamic metropolitan area with a population of nearly 900,000 boasting a wide array of employers, numerous lifestyle amenities, and a high-quality K-12 educational system. The UNO Emergency Management and Disaster Program is the largest undergraduate emergency management and fire services management program in the state and the only program that offers a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management, minors in Emergency Management, Fire Services Management, Tribal Management and Emergency Services and an undergraduate certificate in Tribal Management and Emergency Services. The Emergency Management and Disaster Science Program was only initiated seven years ago, but has proven to be one of the fastest expanding academic programs in the Nebraska University System. Currently, the program has three tenure track positions, three instructor lines, a visiting professor, an academic advisor/program coordinator, a student services associate, and a .5 FTE administrative assistant. At the start of the current academic year 2019-2020, the program had 138 BSEM majors and pre-majors, over 100 minors in Emergency Management, Fire Services Management, and Tribal Management and Emergency Services, over 25 Tribal Management and Emergency Services certificate students, 7 MPA students and two PA doctoral students specializing in Emergency Management.

A successful candidate for this position will possess a PhD in Emergency Management, or a related field and demonstrate a record of excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement. A successful candidate needs to be eligible for tenure at the time of appointment
