A system of Indicators for disaster risk management in the Americas
This paper presents a system of indicators proposed for the Americas that permits a systematic and quantitative benchmarking of each country during different periods between 1980 and 2000, as well as comparisons across countries. Four components or composite indicators have been designed to re
present the main elements of vulnerability and show each country’s progress in managing risk. The four indicators are: The Disaster Deficit Index; The Local Disaster Index; The Prevalent Vulnerability Index; and The Risk Management Index.
