Trick or Treat? REDD, development and sustainable forest management
This briefing explains the origins and meaning of sustainable forest management (SFM) and the risk associated with including it – and thus industrial logging – within the scope of REDD (United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries). It further describes how industrial logging has failed to contribute to lasting sustainable development for forest communities or tropical forest-rich countries, and discusses alternative development models that provide genuine opportunities for protecting forests and improving the livelihoods of forest communities.
