Practical considerations of implementing disaster crisis standards of care in the intensive care unit: A scoping review
The aim of this scoping review was to explore the practical considerations of implementing crisis standards of care in intensive care units during patient surges resulting from disasters.
There is a dearth of literature addressing the pragmatic considerations of crisis standards of care in ICUs during disaster events, particularly in developing countries. When space, human resources and physical resources are depleted in the ICU, clear governance is needed to transition to CSC measures. This may include specific criteria as to when the transition to CSC will occur. Given the complex decision making and moral burden evident when CSC are required, continued efforts to support the ICU workforce before, during, and after a disaster are warranted.
