Lessons learned from implementing integrated child protection and disaster risk reduction in the Deep South of Thailand and Mindanao in the Philippines
This briefing details lessons learned in implementing a regional multi-hazard emergency preparedness, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE) project in the Deep South of Thailand and in Mindanao in the Philippines from May 2020 to June 2022. The project focused on piloting approaches that aim to ensure the most marginalised girls and boys are safe and protected from violence, including sexual and gender-based violence, conflict, natural and everyday hazards in and around the community before, during and after an emergency.
This report outlines key experiences and lessons learned from implementing the project. It explores experiences at regional, national, sub-national and school community level. Activities at the sub-national level included meeting with government officials, establishing or working with child protection and DRR committees, providing trainings and orientations on child protection, supporting the incorporation of child protection in DRR plans. Activities at the community and school level centered on supporting schools to update their DRR plans to include a focus on CPiE and child safeguarding, providing orientations to service providers on CPiE, working with youth groups, and directly with service providers to establish case management and referral systems.
