Atlas of mortality and economic losses from weather, climate and water-related hazards
The World Meteorological Organization has updated data in its Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water-related hazards. The data now cover the period 1970 to 2021. WMO issued the new findings for the quadrennial World Meteorological Congress, which opens on 22 May with a high-level dialogue on accelerating and scaling up action to ensure that early warning services reach everyone on Earth by the end of 2027.
The key findings are:
- Extreme weather, climate and water-related events caused nearly 12 000 disasters from 1970-2021
- Reported economic losses are US$4.3 trillion and rising
- The death toll is at 2 million, with 90% are in developing countries
- Mortality rates have fallen thanks to early warnings
