1. The European Green Deal

The European Commission presents a roadmap for a sustainable  EU economy by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas and making the transition just and inclusive for all. The roadmap includes a proposal for a new, more ambitious EU strategy on adaptation to climate change by 2020/2021.

2. EU launches new Forest Information System (FISE)

Amid a need for more accurate, up-to-date and harmonised data and monitoring on Europe’s valuable woodlands, the EEA and the European Commission have launched a new Forest Information System for Europe (FISE), which aims to become Europe’s knowledge hub to monitor the state, health and sustainability of Europe’s many forests.

3. EU invests EUR 240 million for nature, environment and climate action

More than 120 new projects will be funded under the LIFE programme for the Environment and Climate Action, helping Europe shift to a more sustainable and low-carbon future. EUR 240 million will go to projects in the fields of nature and biodiversity, environment and resource efficiency, and climate action, mobilising additional investments in these areas.

4. EEA report: The European environment - state and outlook 2020 (SOER 2020)

SOER 2020 is the most comprehensive environmental assessment ever undertaken on Europe. It provides a stark snapshot of where Europe stands in meeting 2020 and 2030 policy targets, as well as longer term 2050 goals and ambitions to shift to a sustainable, low carbon future.

5. EEA story maps on projected climate change impacts

A compilation of several existing maps published by the European Environment Agency illustrates how drought, heavy rain and flooding, forest fires and sea-level rise could affect some selected regions in Europe, including Central Europe, the Iberian Peninsula, Scandinavia, Brittany and Venice.

6. New case studies on Climate-ADAPT

Two new adaptation case studies have been published on Climate-ADAPT recently: ‘Incorporating climate change risks in planning of the modernization of the railway corridor in Slovakia’, and ‘Adaptation to climate change in winter tourism in Spessart’ (Germany)

7. WMO Report on the State of Climate Services

This report highlights the progress, opportunities and challenges related to rolling out climate services such as seasonal forecasts, drought advisories and fire danger indices. The report focuses on agriculture and food security, one of the top climate change adaptation priorities of countries.

8. JPI Climate e-magazine: 7 years of project results

The European Joint Programme Initiative (JPI) on Climate has developed an e-magazine to increase its societal impact. The magazine presents results and achievements of projects running since 2013.

Transnational, national and local activities

9. LIFE project ADAPTA BLUES is launched

The 5-year LIFE project, ADAPTA BLUES, focuses on the restoration of European Atlantic estuarine ecosystems as a nature-based solution to remediate the risks related to climate change in coastal areas in three different European regions: Cantabria (Spain), Coimbra (Portugal) and Zeeland (the Netherlands).

10. Evaluation of the Spanish National Adaptation Plan

The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition has completed a comprehensive evaluation of the National Adaptation Plan. The evaluation report makes 38 recommendations that will guide the preparation of the new Second National Adaptation Plan 2021-2030.

11. Methodology for the evaluation of the German Adaptation Strategy

This report presents the concept for the evaluation and further development of the national German Adaptation Strategy, a description of the survey instruments that shall be used and a detailed description on how the concept was developed.

12. Climate change in Germany: New monitoring report illustrates far-reaching impact

The second monitoring report by the Federal Government assesses the effects of climate change in Germany on different sectors and areas.

13. Urban Climate Change Adaptation Plans for cities in Poland

The project 'Development of Urban Adaptation Plans for cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants in Poland' implemented by the Polish Ministry of Environment has been concluded. The adaptation plans developed during the project will be adopted and are formally binding for these Polish cities.

14. Contest on projects dealing with impacts of climate change in Germany: Blauer Kompass

The Federal Environment Agency (UBA) is acknowledging local and regional projects that make a real contribution to coping with the effects of climate change in Germany. The UBA is looking for projects dealing with the impacts of climate change. The winning projects will be celebrated at an award ceremony in Berlin on 26 June 2020.

15. New book Renaturing Cities for urban planners

The Province of Barcelona has published a book to support public stakeholders involved in urban planning and management in the application of naturalisation strategies and measures on urban green spaces in their cities.
