Call for expression of interest for the Global Risk Assessment Framework (GRAF) Expert Group

Source(s): United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction

In November 2017, UNISDR convened an expert meeting to explore the development of a Global Risk Assessment Framework (GRAF) that more comprehensively represents the scope of the Sendai Framework whilst facilitating coherence with the SDGs and Paris Agreement.

As per the Principle Recommendations, which describe the key actions for next steps agreed on during the meeting, UNISDR has issued a call for Expressions of Interest from participants in the Expert Meeting to put forward nominations for consideration to be selected to join the Expert Group. The Expert Group will hold an inaugural meeting in June 2018.

The call for nominations is open to all participants in the Expert Meeting and is also offered to other relevant experts who were unable to attend in November. The initial remit of the Expert Group will be to provide guidance and direction on the design and implementation roadmap for the GRAF, to identify and form a range of Sub-Working Groups and to ensure activities leading up to the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2019 and the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2019 are coordinated with the global Advisory Board for the Global Assessment Report (GAR) including the provision of expert inputs and peer review.

The call is for Expressions of Interest only and does not constitute a right to join the Expert Group which is subject to a transparent selection process to be coordinated by UNISDR, in consultation with partners, against specified criteria.

The Expert Group will not exceed 30 persons in total, and the criteria to be employed for selection will to the degree possible ensure the balanced representation of:

  • technical and operational relevance to the design and development of the GRAF
  • global geographic coverage
  • major stakeholder groups
  • gender.

The initial term for members of the Expert Group is intended to be for approximately 18 months, although this is subject to further consultation and consideration.

One of the principal tasks of the Expert Group will be to determine the Sub-Working Groups that will need to be established in implementing the GRAF.  This EOI will therefore also allow experts to indicate an interest in participating in these Sub-Working Groups.

If you are interested in submitting an Expression of Interest to participate in the Expert Group or Sub-Working Group, please complete the details of the survey below by Monday 16 April 2018.
