The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich is a center of competence for Swiss and international security policy. It offers security policy expertise in research, teaching, and consultancy.

Project background

The Risk and Resilience Team of the Think Tank at CSS is engaged in research and policy consulting on a range of fields that centre on risks, particularly socio-technical hazards, and the way in which these risks are mitigated by human actions or management practices. The team is interested in creating new ways to think about and address today’s complex challenges.

Job description

CSS are looking for a highly motivated expert with proficient knowledge in socio-technical resilience, critical infrastructure protection and emerging technologies. They will work to advance the RRT team's applied research focus on resilience and emerging technologies. This includes a particular focus on developments in artificial intelligence and their implications for critical infrastructure protection, civil protection, and disaster risk reduction. They will publish their findings in policy relevant and scientific publications, and will disseminate knowledge through dialogue with policy-makers and other relevant stakeholders.

Profile

Applicants should have an advanced university degree (MA or PhD), preferably in the social sciences, and demonstrate the capacity to work collaboratively beyond disciplinary boundaries. Having work and/or academic experience in resilience, critical infrastructure protection and/or emerging technologies, e.g. by having published on these topics or taken part in discussions with relevant stakeholders from academia, politics and the corporate world, is a prerequisite for this position. An independent and well-organized working style, good communication skills and the ability to work in an international team will be essential.

The CSS is a multi-lingual working environment, so proficiency in English alongside at least one Swiss national language is required. Work experience in international organizations or think tanks would be an advantage, as is knowledge of the Swiss political landscape.
