Disaster risk reduction: A concern worldwide public talk

The session will be conducted by Dom Hunt, DRR Adviser with Concern Worldwide’s Emergency Unit and is open to all interested in this area. Aaron Clark-Ginsberg, a doctoral researcher at the CHA, will also provide an overview of an ongoing Concern/UCD disaster risk reduction study involving 10 countries.

Disaster risk reduction (DRR) aims to reduce the damage caused by natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, droughts and cyclones, through an ethic of prevention. It includes disciplines like disaster management, disaster mitigation and disaster preparedness, but is also part of sustainable development. In order for development activities to be sustainable they must also reduce disaster risk.

This presentation will offer insights into Concern Worldwide’s DRR work, its Emergency Unit, trends in the occurrence of disasters, what constitutes a ‘disaster’, types of hazards, vulnerability factors, risk analysis, and preparedness for emergency response.
